African Swine Fever Transmission Dynamics Project

African swine fever (ASF) is a highly contagious haemorrhagic disease of domestic pigs, European wild boar and American wild pigs. Signs and symptoms of the disease include; high fever, vomiting, loss of appetite, haemorrhages in the skin and internal organs, and death in 2-10 days with a mortality rates as high as 100%.The disease has no cure nor vaccine.  The diseasewas first detected in Kenya in the early 1920s.

The degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is a three – year full time program of study and in depth scientific research. It is awarded to candidates who successfully complete their research and write a thesis that is examined. Research may be disciplinary on any topic in Zoology or multi-disciplinary so long as it incorporates a component of any discipline in Zoology.

The degree of Masters  of Science (MSc) is undertaken through a two – year full time programme of study and is awarded after examining the candidate in both written examinations and dissertation.  Candidates for the MSc degree specialize in one of four disciplines during their second semester. The disciplines are Entomology, Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, Parasitology and Wildlife Ecology and Management.

It embraces a wide range of topics but present emphasis is on aspects that are directly relevant to the economic development of Uganda. They include all invertebrate and vertebrate groups, Wildlife, Ecology, Fisheries and Aquatic Science, Entomology and Parasitology. Various other supportive disciplines are studied in the department.

Fisheries form an important sector of Uganda’s economy and contribute significantly to the nutritional welfare of millions of people in the great lakes region and currently eexports in Uganda increased to $ 248 Million Dollars by end of 2015. That is why the word Fisheries categorically features in the name of the Ministry: Ministry of Agriculture and Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF).

BSc. Fisheries and Aquaculture

The programme addresses capture fisheries which depends on wild fish stocks and aquaculture which is the production of aquatic organisms under controlled conditions.The overall objective of the programme is to produce well trained and skilled persons understanding the dynamics of aquatic ecosystems. Graduates of this programme should be able to sustainably utilise aquatic resources for the present and future generations.

This association was founded in 2004 by the then president, Mr. Muwonge Gilbert Bengo. It is a registered association with the students Guild and the registration was confirmed on 29th.oct.2008. It belongs to the college of natural sciences (CONAS).

This association was founded in 2004 by the then president, Mr. Muwonge Gilbert Bengo. It is a registered association with the students Guild and the registration was confirmed on 29th.oct.2008. It belongs to the college of natural sciences (CONAS).The aim of this students association is to bring together all the fisheries students of this great institution on board, both the alumni and the present students. We have a patron, Dr. Gladys Bwanika who is also one of our dearest lecturers at zoology.
