TOPIC: HIERARCHICAL MODELS FOR SPATIO-TEMPORAL PROCESSES IN DATA ANALYSIS.

ABSTRACT:

Spatio-temporal processes evolve in space and time. As a consequence data from such processes, possess both temporal and spatial dependence which have to be reflected by fitted stochastic models. The existing models, may fail to provide a proper fit. Many spatio-temporal data, especially when the data set possesses features which contradict the assumption of normality. In this thesis we present the extension of the existing hierarchical models that are capable of capturing the complicated structures in both large and small data sets.

A non-linear general spatio-temporal model is developed by extending Serfling’s model. The model is used in the derivation of the Locally Weighted Scatter plot smoothing (LOESS) predictor for both the spatial interpolation and temporal prediction of spatial temporal processes. Theoretical findings are applied to real data of an outbreak of influenza in Southern Germany. The study shows that, the LOESS outperforms the classical linear predictor in terms of providing smaller values for performance measure computed by cross-validation. We then extend the classical effects model by introducing the correlation coefficient between random effects in its definition. Bayesian inference procedures for the model parameters are obtained when objective priors, are employed for the model parameters. We consider the problem of Bayesian estimation heterogeneity parameter in the generalized random effects model and compare the obtained results with the existing approaches from frequentists and Bayesian statistics. The findings are used for consensus building in meta-analyses of measurement results for the Newtonian constant of gravitation. We therefore recommend, that the use of our models, to overcome dependence problem in data arising from spatio-temporal processes and data with small data sets.

African Water Resources Mobility Network (AWaRMN) Project Launch webadmin Wed, 10/13/2021 - 16:06

The Intra-Africa Academic Mobility Scheme of the European Union supportsstudent and staff mobility in Africa. The overall objective of the programme is to enhance human capital development in Africa, while strengthening intra-African cooperation in higher education as called for by the Agenda 2063. Achieving sustainable development, and inclusive growth within Africa would largely be undermined if its water resources are not sustainably managed, utilised, protected, and governed. The continent is facing multiple water-related challenges, including declining water quantity and quality, inadequate governance and institutional structures, declining monitoring networks, increasing resource use in the face of a growing human population, and increasing resource variability associated with future changing climates. As the region strives toward improving political, economic and social stability, the importance of secure water supplies will assume increasing significance. If this is neglected, a potential for conflict exists:

1. within and between communities through a lack of water- and sanitation-related access and services,

2. between countries through a lack of agreement on transboundary sharing of water resources and most importantly, and

3. between societal constituencies through perceived non-inclusive and equitable sharing of water resources (distributive justice).

The African Water Resource Mobility Network (AWaRMN), a project of the Intra-Africa Academic Mobility Scheme of the European Union, is set up to address the pressing water-related needs on the African continent. Addressing these pressing needs is achieved through:

1. transdisciplinary, socially-engaged training embedded in existing programmes within partner institutions, ensuring an increase in the number of highly qualified and competent graduates (MSc and PhD) in the field of water resources in Africa;

2. developing and harmonising programmes and curricula, with a particular emphasis on disciplinary excellence and transdisciplinary capability;

3. building and sustaining teaching and research capabilities among partner institutions; 4. designing and implementing research programmes based on collaboration and cooperation during, and beyond, the AWARMN funding;

5. facilitating student and staff mobility to promote multiculturalism and internationalisation among African institutions of higher learning;

6. contributing to innovation and water technologies that advance social-economic development of Africa and;

7. addressing the professional career development and employability of graduates by creating a direct interface between AWARMN and industry partners.

AWaRMN is funded by the Intra-Africa Academic Mobility Scheme of the European Union (https://eacea.ec.europa.eu/intra-africa_en)

ABSTRACT

The study of permutations, and specifically flattened partitions is an active area of current research. We provide a new combinatorial interpretation to the sequence A124324 in the On-line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences (OEIS) database by means of a combinatorial bijection between flattened partitions over [n+ 1] and the partitions of [n]. We introduce the numbers f (n, k) which count the number of flattened partitions over [n] having k runs, and we give recurrence relations defining them, as well as their exponential generating function in differential form. We extend the results to flattened partitions where the first s integers belong to different runs. Combinatorial proofs are given. We further count the number of distinct flattened partitions over [n] avoiding a single pattern of length three, as well as a pair of such patterns. Several famous counting sequences, namely Catalan numbers, powers of two, Fibonacci numbers and Motzkin numbers arise. We also consider other combinatorial statistics, namely runs and inversions, and establish some bijections in situations where the statistics coincide. We study a sorting procedure (run-sorting) on permutations, where runs are rearranged in lexicographic order. We describe a rather surprising bijection on permutations on length n, with the property that it sends the set of peak-values to the set of peak-values after run-sorting. We also prove that the expected number of descents in a permutation σ ∈ Sn after run-sorting is equal to (n − 2)/3. We also provide a closed form of the exponential generating function introduced by Nabawanda, Rakotondrajao and Bamunoba in 2020, for the number of run-sorted permutations over [n], (RSP(n)) having k runs, which gives a new interpretation to the sequence A124324 on the OEIS database. We show that the descent generating polynomials, A_n(t) for RSP(n) are real-rooted, and satisfy an interlacing property similar to that satisfied by the Eulerian polynomials. Finally, we study run-sorted binary words and compute the expected number of descents after run-sorting a binary word of length n.

Ornamental fish is the coloured fish that can be reared indoors and is mostly used in aquariums for beautification purposes. “For many years, countries have been importing ornamental fish. This kind of fish is expensive and can boost a country’s economy if invested in,” says Dr. Juliet Nattabi, a lecturer at Makerere University’s Department of Zoology, Entomology and Fisheries Sciences. “We have ornamental fish in Uganda, but unfortunately, people have not exploited the natural resources to their full potential,” she says.

Dr. Nattabi says that through funds acquired from the first Makerere Research and Innovation Fund (Mak-RIF One) project for the potential of utilization of ornamental fish species for training and business development in Uganda, the Department of Zoology, Entomology and Fisheries Sciences refurbished the university’s dilapidated aquarium.

This was done in order to train students and the public in how to look out for other fish species and take care of them indoors. With the training, Dr. Nattabi hopes that Uganda’s ornamental fish can attract the international market.

Fish Collection and Preservation with Hanna Instrument

Dr. Nattabi says that each year, a team of students and staff conduct fieldwork at Lake Nabugabo to collect samples of fish, both passively and actively. “We use the Hanna instrument to take the oxygen, conductivity, and temperature to be used when transporting the fish,” she says. The fish is transported using a tank and an inverter, and later placed in the receiver for observation and selection.

Challenges

Kluivert Francis Namutete, a former student in the department,  says some fish died because the team had not yet devised means to breed mosquitos that some species feed on.

“While in the field, they did not have licenses and equipment. We ended up using fishermen’s equipment at a fee,” says Dr. Nattabi, adding that delayed procurement of equipment was a problem and that the team had needed to be creative to achieve their goals.

Continuity after the project

“With the aquarium refurbished up to 80% , we shall keep collecting fish and maintaining the 18 ornamental fish species; and we shall train both students and members of the public in how to look after indoor fish,” Dr. Nattabi says.  She adds that findings of Namutete’s research will also provide guidance on caring for the species. For his undergraduate research in 2020, Namutete documented the potential ornamental fish species from samples collected from Lake Nabugabo ecosystem.

Recommendations

The team desires to extend their project, and they particularly encourage women to join and promote the ornamental fish trade, since it is indoor and convenient.
